Dances of a Hill Tribe for Two Violas and Invisible Drums (Transcription)

The original version is "Dances of a Hill Tribe for Two Violins and Invisible Drums" composed by Chaipruck Mekara  Performed by Ensemble TIMF (Tongyeong International Music Festival, Korea) July 19, 2006.

The piece was inspired by a dance and its drums pattern of the Maew tribe, one of the Northern hill tribes in Thailand.  The drums have an easy ostinato pattern in common time.  It is in a faster tempo than those of many tribes in Thailand.

In this work, the open strings represent the drums while the two violins are the two master dancers of the tribe.  The form is a simple A B A form.  Both A sections are faster and fun sections while the B section is in open time, representing free dancing.  The pitches dominant in the piece are ACBG and Bb with A and C being the most important pitches because they are the initial letters of my daughter’s and my name (Angela and Chaipruck).
