Kheak Choen Joaw Fantasy for Symphonic Band Analysis
Kheak Choen Joaw Fantasy for Symphonic Band is an original composition by Chaipruck Mekara based on thematic material drawn from the Thai traditional piece Kheak Choen Joaw (literally, “Inviting the God”). The work represents Mekara’s synthesis of Thai traditional musical language within a Western symphonic band idiom — an approach the composer describes as “Thai music in Western outfits.”
The composition was commissioned by The Prince Royal’s College Concert Band and received its world premiere in November 2007. It is catalogued in the Wind Repertory Project: windrep.org/Kheak_Choen_Joaw_Fantasy
The program notes for the work are reproduced below. For additional contemporary works by Mekara, visit the Contemporary Music collection.
